What is robotic surgery?

Robotic-assisted surgery is a form of keyhole (minimally invasive) surgery where the surgeon controls advanced robotic instruments to carry out precise movements inside the body. It allows for smaller incisions, less pain after surgery, and a quicker return to everyday life.

At Manchester Women’s Health, robotic surgery is performed by Consultant Gynaecologist Dr Sujata Gupta, who is an experienced proctor and trainer in this field.

When is robotic surgery used?

Robotic surgery is particularly useful in gynaecology when operating in small or delicate spaces. It offers improved visual clarity and precision, making it ideal for:

  • Severe or deep endometriosis
  • Complex fibroid removal (myomectomy)
  • Hysterectomy (removal of the womb)
  • Removal of ovarian cysts
  • Pelvic pain surgery
  • Reconstructive procedures

What are the benefits?

Compared to traditional open surgery, robotic-assisted surgery offers several advantages:

  • Smaller incisions and less scarring
  • Reduced blood loss
  • Lower risk of infection
  • Shorter hospital stay (often day case or overnight)
  • Faster recovery and return to normal activities
  • Less post-operative pain

Not everyone will need robotic surgery, but when appropriate, it can offer a more comfortable and efficient recovery.

Is robotic surgery safe?

Yes — robotic surgery has been used for many years and is well established in gynaecology. The “robot” is not autonomous; it is fully controlled by the surgeon at all times. The equipment enhances the surgeon’s ability to perform complex procedures with greater accuracy.

What is the recovery like?

Most patients go home within 24 hours. You may feel tired or experience mild discomfort for a few days, but most people return to light activity within a week, and more strenuous tasks within a few weeks.

We’ll provide clear aftercare instructions and check in with you during your recovery.
