What is HRT?

Hormone Replacement Therapy (HRT) is used to relieve symptoms of the menopause by replacing hormones that your body no longer produces at the same levels. These include oestrogen, and in some cases, progesterone and testosterone.

HRT can ease symptoms such as hot flushes, mood changes, poor sleep and vaginal dryness. It also supports bone and heart health in the long term.

Who is it for?

HRT may be right for you if:

  • You’re experiencing symptoms linked to perimenopause or menopause
  • Hot flushes, brain fog or disrupted sleep are affecting your daily life
  • You’ve been through early menopause (before age 45)
  • You want to reduce your risk of bone thinning or heart problems
  • You’ve tried to manage symptoms naturally but still feel unwell

We’ll guide you through your options, taking into account your full medical history.

What types of HRT are available?

There are several ways to take HRT. We’ll help you find the one that suits your lifestyle and health needs.

  • Tablets – taken daily by mouth
  • Skin patches – changed every few days
  • Gels or sprays – applied directly to the skin
  • Vaginal oestrogen – in cream, pessary or ring form, for dryness or discomfort
  • Hormonal coil (IUS) – often used alongside oestrogen, especially if you need womb lining protection
  • Testosterone – sometimes offered to help with libido and low energy

We’ll explain the pros and cons of each option clearly.

What are the benefits?

  • Relief from hot flushes and night sweats
  • Better mood and concentration
  • Improved sleep
  • Support for vaginal health and sex drive
  • Reduced risk of osteoporosis when started early

Are there any risks?

HRT is safe for most people when carefully prescribed. The small risks involved depend on the type of HRT and your individual health.

We’ll take the time to:

  • Review your personal and family medical history
  • Explain any risks linked to blood clots or breast cancer
  • Offer the safest and most suitable option for you

Your treatment will be monitored and reviewed regularly.
