What is PCOS?
Polycystic Ovary Syndrome, or PCOS, is a common hormonal condition that can affect your menstrual cycle, skin, weight and fertility. It is linked to higher levels of certain hormones, including androgens, and may cause small cysts to develop on the ovaries.
Not everyone with PCOS has the same symptoms, and not everyone with cysts on their ovaries has PCOS. That’s why a proper assessment by a specialist is important.
Common Symptoms
The symptoms can vary widely. You might experience just one or two, or several at the same time.
These can include:
- Irregular or missed periods
- Difficulty getting pregnant
- Unwanted hair growth on the face or body
- Oily skin or acne
- Weight gain or difficulty losing weight
- Thinning hair on the scalp
Some people also notice low energy or mood changes. If you have any of these signs, it’s worth getting checked.
How is PCOS Diagnosed?
Diagnosis is based on your symptoms, a detailed history, and investigations. These may include:
- A pelvic ultrasound scan to check for cysts on the ovaries
- Blood tests to check hormone levels
A diagnosis can often be made based on two or more features, such as irregular periods and raised hormone levels.
Managing PCOS
There is no single cure, but PCOS can be managed successfully. Treatment depends on your symptoms and whether you are planning a pregnancy.
Options may include:
- Lifestyle changes, such as adjustments to diet and exercise
- Medication to regulate your periods
- Treatment for acne or excess hair growth
- Support with weight management
- Fertility treatment if you’re trying to conceive
We’ll work with you to create a plan that fits your needs and supports your long-term health.
