What are Fibroids?

Fibroids are non-cancerous growths that develop in or around the womb. They’re made up of muscle and fibrous tissue, and can vary in size from very small to large enough to affect the shape of the womb.

They’re quite common and often don’t cause any symptoms. However, for some people, fibroids can cause discomfort, heavy periods or pressure on the bladder or bowel.

There are different types, depending on where they grow. These include fibroids within the wall of the womb, on the outer surface, or within the womb lining.

Common Symptoms

Not everyone with fibroids experiences symptoms, but when they do occur, they may include:

  • Heavy or prolonged periods
  • Pelvic pain or pressure
  • Frequent need to pass urine
  • Pain during sex
  • Constipation
  • A swollen or bloated abdomen
  • Difficulty getting pregnant

If you’re experiencing any of these, especially if they’re affecting your daily life, it’s a good idea to speak to a specialist.

How are Fibroids Diagnosed?

Fibroids are usually diagnosed through:

  • A pelvic examination
  • An ultrasound scan (transvaginal or abdominal)
  • In some cases, an MRI may be used to look at size and location in more detail

These tests help determine whether treatment is needed and what type would be most suitable.

Treatment Options

Many fibroids do not need treatment, particularly if they aren’t causing symptoms. If they are, there are a number of options depending on your age, plans for pregnancy, and how the fibroids are affecting you.

These may include:

  • Medication to control heavy bleeding or shrink the fibroids
  • Hormonal treatments, including the coil (IUS)
  • Minimally invasive surgery to remove the fibroids (myomectomy)
  • Keyhole or robotic surgery for suitable cases
  • In some cases, a hysterectomy may be recommended

We’ll talk you through every option and help you choose the path that’s right for you.
