What is cervical screening?

Cervical screening (sometimes called a smear test) is a routine test that looks for high-risk types of human papillomavirus (HPV) — the virus that can lead to cell changes in the cervix.

If high-risk HPV is found, the sample is then checked for abnormal cells. Catching these changes early means they can be monitored or treated before they have the chance to develop into anything more serious.

Cervical screening is one of the most effective ways to prevent cervical cancer.

Who should have it — and when?

In the UK, cervical screening is offered to women and people with a cervix aged between 25 and 64.

  • Aged 25 to 49: every 3 years
  • Aged 50 to 64: every 5 years
  • You may be advised to attend more often if you’ve had previous abnormal results or treatment

At Manchester Women’s Health, we also offer private cervical screening for those who are:

  • Overdue for their NHS test
  • Experiencing symptoms or concerns
  • Looking for peace of mind between routine tests
  • Not eligible for NHS screening due to age or other reasons

What is HPV?

HPV (human papillomavirus) is a very common virus that most people will come into contact with at some point. In most cases, the body clears it on its own. However, some high-risk types of HPV can cause changes in the cells of the cervix, which is why regular screening is important.

HPV is passed on through skin-to-skin contact, usually during sexual activity. It often has no symptoms, so the only way to detect it is through a test.

What happens during the test?

Cervical screening is a quick procedure that takes just a few minutes. You’ll be asked to lie back, and a small sample of cells will be collected from your cervix using a soft brush. Some people find it a little uncomfortable, but it shouldn’t be painful.

Our team will explain the process beforehand and help you feel at ease throughout.

Results and follow-up

You’ll usually receive your results within a few days. If high-risk HPV or abnormal cells are found, we’ll talk through the next steps, which may include:

  • Further screening after a set period of time
  • Colposcopy (a closer look at the cervix using a microscope)
  • Treatment to remove any abnormal cells, if needed

We’ll be here to support you through the process and answer any questions you may have.

Why choose Manchester Women’s Health?

  • Private cervical screening with flexible appointments
  • Clear explanation of results and what they mean
  • Quick access to colposcopy or follow-up care if required
