What is abnormal bleeding?
Abnormal bleeding refers to any bleeding that falls outside of what’s expected for your menstrual cycle. This might include:
- Bleeding between periods
- Bleeding after sex
- Bleeding after menopause
- Unusually heavy bleeding
- Bleeding that lasts much longer than usual
While many causes are not serious, abnormal bleeding should always be assessed, especially if it’s persistent or you’re unsure what’s causing it.
Possible Causes
Abnormal bleeding can be caused by a number of conditions, including:
- Hormonal imbalances
- Fibroids or polyps
- Endometriosis
- Cervical or womb abnormalities
- Perimenopause or menopause
- Side effects of contraception
- Infections or inflammation
- Less commonly, precancerous or cancerous changes
Finding the cause early allows us to offer the right treatment and put your mind at ease.
When to seek help
We recommend seeing a specialist if you experience:
- Bleeding between periods for more than one cycle
- Bleeding after sex, especially if it’s happening regularly
- Bleeding after your periods have stopped (postmenopausal bleeding)
- A noticeable change in your usual cycle
- Bleeding that leaves you feeling weak or tired
You won’t be rushed or dismissed — our team is here to listen and help you find clear answers.
How we investigate abnormal bleeding
Your assessment may include:
- A full consultation and pelvic examination
- A cervical smear test (if due or indicated)
- An ultrasound scan
- Blood tests to check hormone levels or rule out infection
- A hysteroscopy (a simple procedure to look inside the womb), if needed
We’ll explain every step and only recommend tests that are appropriate for your symptoms.
Treatment options
Treatment will depend on the cause, but may include:
- Hormonal treatments or adjusting your current contraception
- Medication to reduce bleeding
- Treatment for infections or inflammation
- Removal of fibroids or polyps, if needed
- Monitoring and follow-up where no treatment is required
Our aim is to give you clarity and confidence at every stage.
