Meet Dr Rizwana Yakub

MBChB MRCGP DRCOG (Medallist) DFSRH LoC IUD/SDI

[Dr Rizwana Yakub – GP with a specialist interest in women’s health]

Dr Rizwana Yakub is a GP with a specialist interest in women’s health and many years of training in gynaecology. She works closely with Dr Sujata Gupta and leads consultations for patients attending the menopause clinic. Her approach combines medical expertise with real empathy for the difficulties women face during this time of life.

Her areas of clinical interest include:

  • Menopause and perimenopause
  • Menstrual bleeding problems
  • Contraception and long-acting methods

Understanding Menopause Symptoms

Menopause typically occurs around the age of 50 to 51, but symptoms may begin earlier during perimenopause. These symptoms can vary widely and sometimes feel overwhelming. Dr Yakub regularly sees women who come to her feeling exhausted, anxious, or simply unsure of what’s going on with their body.

Common symptoms include:

  • Hot flushes and night sweats (vasomotor symptoms)
  • Sleep disturbance and fatigue
  • Low mood or irritability
  • Palpitations and anxiety
  • Vaginal dryness or discomfort
  • Brain fog or difficulty concentrating
  • Changes in libido (Sex drive)

Managing Hot Flushes and Vasomotor Symptoms

Hot flushes often start in the upper body — the chest, neck or face — and can strike unexpectedly. Some women describe feeling intense heat, followed by sweating, anxiety, or a racing heart. These symptoms can be disruptive and unpredictable, whether you’re at work, socialising, or simply relaxing at home.

Dr Yakub encourages patients to explore a variety of management options, such as:

  • Identifying and avoiding common triggers like caffeine, spicy food, or stress
  • Keeping a water bottle nearby
  • Using a fan during the day or at night
  • Wearing light layers and avoiding dark or heat-retaining fabrics
  • Having a cool flannel or opening a window
  • Making small lifestyle adjustments to reduce intensity and frequency

When self-care strategies are not enough, there are further options available — and this is where specialist support can make a real difference.
