What is the contraceptive pill?
The contraceptive pill is one of the most commonly used methods of hormonal contraception. It’s taken daily to prevent pregnancy and can also be used to manage symptoms like heavy periods, painful cramps, acne or hormonal imbalance.
There are different types of pill available, and finding the right one can make a big difference in how you feel.
Who is it for?
The pill may be a good option if you:
- Want a reliable, easy-to-use form of contraception
- Prefer something non-invasive
- Experience heavy, painful or irregular periods
- Have hormonal acne or PMS symptoms
- Are not ready for long-term methods like the coil or implant
It may not be suitable for everyone, especially if you have a history of migraines, blood pressure problems or certain medical conditions — which is why a proper consultation is important.
What types of pill are available?
There are two main types:
Combined Pill
Contains oestrogen and progestogen
Examples include: Microgynon, Rigevidon, Yasmin, Lucette
- Usually taken for 21 days with a 7-day break, or continuously
- Can regulate periods and reduce bleeding or pain
- Not suitable for everyone, especially if there’s a risk of blood clots
Mini Pill (Progestogen-Only Pill)
Contains progestogen only
Examples include: Cerazette, Cerelle, Noriday
- Taken every day without a break
- Safer for people who can’t take oestrogen
- Can make periods lighter, irregular, or stop altogether
There’s also the Emergency Contraceptive Pill (sometimes called the morning after pill), which can be taken after unprotected sex. We can advise on the best option and when it should be used.
What are the risks and side effects?
Side effects are often mild and settle within the first few months. These may include:
- Nausea
- Headaches
- Changes in mood or libido
- Breast tenderness
- Spotting between periods
We’ll help you monitor how you respond and switch to a different pill if needed. Serious risks, such as blood clots, are rare and will be discussed during your appointment.
