What is contraception?
Contraception helps prevent pregnancy, and there are many types available to suit different needs and preferences. It can also be used to manage period symptoms, hormonal imbalances, or certain gynaecological conditions.
At Manchester Women’s Health, we offer personalised contraceptive advice and private fittings, so you can make a decision that’s right for you without the rush or pressure.
Who is it for?
Whether you’re:
- Starting contraception for the first time
- Looking to switch methods
- Experiencing side effects
- Managing a condition like PCOS or heavy periods
- Planning ahead but not yet ready to start a family
We’re here to guide you through the options with honest, straightforward advice.
What types of contraception are available?
We offer a full range of contraceptive methods, including:
Intrauterine Device (IUD) – Non-Hormonal (Copper Coil)
- Lasts up to 10 years
- Does not contain hormones
- May cause heavier periods in some people
Intrauterine System (IUS) – Hormonal Coil
- Lasts 3 to 5 years
- Often makes periods lighter or stop completely
- Commonly used for contraception and managing heavy periods
Contraceptive Implant
- Lasts up to 3 years
- A small rod inserted under the skin in the upper arm
- Releases a steady dose of hormone
Contraceptive Injection
- Lasts 8 to 13 weeks, depending on the type
- Given by a healthcare professional
- Useful for people who prefer not to take something daily
Contraceptive Patch and Vaginal Ring
- Weekly (patch) or monthly (ring) methods
- Contain oestrogen and progestogen
- Easy to use but may not suit everyone
Barrier Methods (e.g. condoms, diaphragms)
- Also help protect against STIs
- Used at the time of sex
We’ll talk through the pros and cons of each method and help you weigh up the factors that matter most — such as effectiveness, side effects, convenience, and your long-term plans.
