What is the menopause?

The menopause marks the time when your periods stop permanently. It’s a natural part of ageing and usually occurs between the ages of 45 and 55. You’re considered to have reached the menopause once you’ve gone 12 months without a period.

The perimenopause is the phase leading up to this. It can last several years and is when most people begin to notice symptoms due to changing hormone levels.

Common Symptoms

Menopause symptoms affect everyone differently. Some people experience only mild changes, while others find it has a significant impact on their wellbeing.

Common symptoms include:

  • Irregular periods
  • Hot flushes or night sweats
  • Mood swings or low mood
  • Poor sleep
  • Brain fog or difficulty concentrating
  • Anxiety or low confidence
  • Vaginal dryness or discomfort during sex
  • Reduced libido
  • Joint aches or fatigue

These symptoms can start in your 40s or earlier, and it’s common to feel unsure whether what you’re experiencing is hormonal. That’s where expert support can make a difference.

How we assess your symptoms

We’ll begin with a consultation to understand how you’re feeling and what changes you’ve noticed. If needed, we may arrange:

  • Blood tests to assess hormone levels (especially in younger people or those under 45)
  • A review of your general health, lifestyle and medical history

There’s no one-size-fits-all approach to menopause care. What matters most is how your symptoms are affecting your quality of life.

Treatment and support

Treatment is based on your individual needs, goals and preferences. We may suggest:

  • Hormone Replacement Therapy (HRT) to restore oestrogen levels and relieve symptoms
  • Non-hormonal treatments, if HRT is not suitable
  • Vaginal oestrogen to relieve dryness or discomfort
  • Advice on diet, exercise, and supplements to support bone and heart health
  • Emotional wellbeing support and mental health strategies

We’ll give you clear, evidence-based information so you can decide what’s right for you.
