A Modern Approach to Hysterectomy
Hysterectomy has traditionally involved a long horizontal or vertical incision across the lower abdomen, often requiring several nights in hospital and a recovery period of six to eight weeks.
With advances in robotic-assisted surgery, that’s no longer the only option. Now, with just a few small keyhole incisions in the tummy (typically less than a centimetre each), we can perform complex gynaecological procedures like hysterectomy with greater precision, less pain, and a much shorter recovery time.
Real Patient Experiences with Day Case Surgery
Just this week, I looked after two women who had robotic hysterectomies as day case procedures. Both were discharged within 4 to 6 hours and continued their recovery in the comfort of their own homes.
For many people, being surrounded by familiar faces and in familiar surroundings makes a huge difference. But beyond comfort, early discharge also reduces the risk of hospital-acquired infections and blood clots, both of which can delay recovery.
National Guidance and Best Practices
Day case hysterectomy is now supported by national best-practice guidance, helping pave the way for its wider adoption as a safe and effective option for selected patients.
